Partnering to Achieve

Here at Pocket Angel we are excited to announce a new partnership with two dynamic organisations who are working towards addressing social deprivation.

Justlife prevents those living in temporary accommodation in Brighton and Manchester from falling into rough sleeping by addressing their health, housing and wellbeing needs, alongside research & policy work to identify long-term solutions to homelessness. Pocket Angel is partnering with Justlife as the distributor of vouchers which are gifted to us.

onHand uses technology to link volunteers with people needing help with errands and other simple tasks. Pocket Angel is partnering with onHand to pick up and deliver food when the recipient of vouchers cannot go out.

Together, the three organisations aim to ensure that those who need it most will receive the services that you have so kindly donated through our vouchers.

We are also excited that these partnerships may be the springboard to allow Pocket Angel to expand into other towns and cities once we have fully established that our model and technology provide a new means for people to give.

We are Live!

After some updates from Android and Apple, Pocket Angel Assist required changes and retesting this meant a short delay in our launch.

However, we are delighted to announce that we are now available for download on both stores and you can purchase vouchers directly from this site using the “Vouchers” link at the top of every page.

These are exciting times for us and we want to thank all of our supporters for your help and encouragement along the way.

Once we have proven our model works in Brighton, we will look to roll out in other locations in the UK and around the world.

April 2020 – Continuing to Work

Even though we have to be remote from each other, Pocket Angel continues to work to support the most vulnerable people in our community through ensuring that messaging and awareness is maintained during these difficult times. We are also working on supplying items such as hand sanitiser to supporting organisations and individuals.

Here we are working with the Bright Young Things from Brighton University on our social media messaging. We are grateful for the support on this initiative from the experts from Edelman, and the supply of technology to allow us to work remotely by HPE.

March 2020 – Pocket Angel Planning

The Directors of Pocket Angel met with some of this years’ Bright Young Things (BYT) team to discuss and decide on the marketing engagement for the Spring and Summer.

We reviewed the BYT ideas for Pocket Angel messaging – we are excited by the fantastic, fresh, ideas that the team are dreaming up. We also worked towards how the BYT team will work with Edelman to spread the message of how and what Pocket Angel is achieving.

Watch this space for more news on our engagement both with the public and Service Providers.

January 2020 – Pocket Angel Becomes a Community Interest Company (CIC)

In early January Pocket Angel went through the process of registering as a Community Interest Company. This means that any funds we raise will be focused on our mission and at the same time we can move forward with the business side of our activities – setting up bank accounts, applying for grant funding, and working with other organisations to work towards achieving our goals.

May 2019 – The Pocket Angel Service Provider Information Event – Success!

On May 21st 2019 Pocket Angel ran our Service Provider Information Event in the room kindly donated by the Hilton Metropole Brighton.

We took the opportunity to introduce businesses not only to the Pocket Angel ethos, but also had speakers from the homeless community to give first hand accounts of the tough life they lead, and The Passage allowed us to use their Virtual Reality movie of the perspective of a rough sleeper on the pavement of Oxford Street, London, on a Saturday afternoon.

The event was incredibly well received and we had super feedback on our technology and what we are trying to achieve.

We also took this opportunity to publish for the first time our Mission Statement, including Assist, Restore, Inform, and Home.

The Birth of Pocket Angel

The Pocket Angel app was born out of the need to allow the general public a means of helping homeless people in an increasingly cashless society.

The Pocket Angel founders regularly come into contact with homeless rough sleepers on our commute who ask us for money. We tend not to give money and usually buy the person a meal if we have the time.

This is not always possible and in 2016 Alcia had a light bulb moment. If there was a way to give the homeless person a voucher that would solve the problem. The Pocket Angel app allows you to provide food, shelter and basic hygiene essentials to homeless persons without giving them cash. In Autumn 2018 Alcia launched a Gofundme campaign to raise £5,000 to complete the development of the Pocket Angel app. The campaign on Gofundme, along with funds raised at various events like the Sleep Out on The Macs Farm and a cake sale at Hurstpierpoint College, were successful and the full amount was raised just before midnight of New Year’s Eve 2018. Alcia was overcome with joy! The campaign is still live and donations are welcome as there will be future need for funding to help us achieve a successful pilot of the app.
